Building MS Excel User Interfaces for Aspen Plus Simulations Using Aspen Simulation Workbook

Introduction – What is Aspen Simulation Workbook (ASW)

·         Brief introduction about Aspen Simulation workbook and the add in tool in MS Excel®

Basic Features of ASW

·         Manage the ASW Add-in inside Excel

·         Overview of the ASW Environment and working with Model Variables

·         Use the Table Wizard to build tables of simulation variables

·         Workshop: Create a process flow diagram using ASW process icon library

·         Workshop: Link an Aspen Plus simulation process, add key model variables to the Variable Organizer and create tables of the variables in ASW

·         Workshop: Create a table template for creating multiple tables using the same layout and format

Adding Automation to Your ASW Interface

·         Add MS Excel® equations and create plots of Aspen Plus variables

·         Insert ASW functions and assign ASW macros to add functionality

·         Enhance the interface using conditional formatting

·         Workshop: Add an ASW function to retrieve the simulation status and an ASW macro to change a column reflux ratio using a scroll bar

Running Scenarios

·         Overview of Scenarios and setting up Scenario Tables to run multiple cases

·         Workshop: Create a Scenario analysis to evaluate the effect of changing the reactor conversion of benzene to cyclohexane on reactor heat duty

Linking Models to Process Data

·         Link simulation model variables with plant process data and create Plant Data Tables

·         Workshop: Import key process data tags and map the tags to model variables.  Plot the model and plant variables for a column temperature profile.

Publishing and Deploying Models

·         Restrict end-user access to ASW features

·         Encapsulate model files or pointers to files in ASW workbooks for easier distribution to end-users through email, MS SharePoint, etc.

·         Deploy files over a web server

·         Workshop: Set access conditions on a flowsheet interface to prevent accessing the Aspen Plus model and Workbook Organizer and make the simulation active on startup of the ASW workbook

Troubleshooting Common ASW Issues

·         Change the location or name of the linked Aspen Plus simulation file

·         Best practice to minimize breaking links between workbook and model variables

·         Create automatic Backups of ASW data

·         Verify workbook data before saving.
